Mayor Jim Watson officially celebrated the completion of Phase two of the Roy Duncan park by raising the Canadian flag. Those attending the event which numbered about 300 over the afternoon (June 26) joined Deby Waserman, a Van Lang resident, in signing O’Canada.
Other events at the celebration included a Nicaraguan dance by the Ottawa group Ruben Dario, face painting, balloon tying, a performance by the Junkyard Symphony and visit an Ottawa fire department. Everyone enjoyed the barbeque.
The park is a jewel of the Westboro Beach neighbourhood. The work of the community to improve the park is dedicated to the children of Van Lang and Westboro Beach.
The celebration was organized by the Van Lang Mortimer Tenants Group with the Westboro Beach Community Association, the Carlington Community Health Centre and Ottawa Community Housing.
This summer, the Ontario Early Years Centre will offer a program in the park Tuesday morning from 9:15 to 11:00 (June 28 to July 19); the Dovercourt Recreation Centre and Carlington Community Health Centre will offer a youth program Monday (6:00 to 8:00 pm) for ages 12 to 18 from July 4 to August 29; Carlington and the City of Ottawa will offer Girls on the Move-Ultra Play (ages 9 to 13) on Tuesdays (5:00 to 6:30 pm) from July 12 to August 16.
